The Benefits of CALM Hemp Extract For Sleep
Sometimes overlooked, often underrated, quality sleep and placid rest are two primary factors that support a lifestyle of balanced wellness. A lot goes on while we sleep that we don’t notice or even think about. It’s in essential states of deep slumber that the mind and body literally recharges, resets, and recovers.
During the various stages of sleep your brain signals to cells and body systems that it’s time to re-optimize. While you’re sweet dreamin’ away your cardiovascular system receives a much-needed break, while crucial energy reserves are replenished. Memory maintenance is a huge aspect of sleep too. Not only are long-term memories established during sleep, but it’s also when your brain reorganizes and processes data and information so they are more clear and concise. We can’t forget what sleep does for hormones and tissue either. During NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep, tissue growth and repair occurs, while vital hormones—like ghrelin and leptin which dictate feelings of hunger and fullness—are released. It’s this collection of body maintenance activities that leads to happier, brighter moods and emotions following a solid night’s rest.
And the key to it all is getting both quality and consistent sleep.
“The idea is not just to get to sleep, but to have quality, uninterrupted or minimally interrupted sleep. Part of getting quality sleep is multifaceted. It includes having a balanced diet, not watching television or being in front of a screen before bed, and having a relaxation routine that helps transition from being awake to sleep,” says PrimeMyBody Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Cheng Ruan.
Most medical professionals and sleep-related associations say that adequate sleep durations should range from 7-8 hours per night for the average adult, and 8-10 hours for teens and early twenty-somethings. In 2018, the National Sleep Foundation published study results that found 50 to 70 million U.S. adults experience symptoms of a sleep disorder, and that a third of the population experiences insomnia at some point in their lives. Those are startling figures considering how much health maintenance is dependent upon quality sleep. That’s where CALM comes in.
The CALM Effect
Sleep and rest seem like they should come effortlessly, but sometimes shutting the body and mind down isn’t a graceful endeavor. Whether you have trouble sleeping or want to support your sleep routine, CALM hemp extract is crafted to naturally interact with your body’s chemistry to promote quality sleep cycles. While many sleep aids induce drowsiness or a temporary sleep-like state, CALM Rest & Relax Hemp Extract is formulated with three complementary ingredient blends that aid natural sleep patterns and promote physical and mental relaxation. These blends include: Neurotransmitter Activators, Herbal Adapter Extracts, and Master Balancers.
Neurotransmitter Activators
CALM rest and relax hemp extract is formulated with three specific neurotransmitter activator nutraceutical ingredients including Magnesium L-Threonate, L-Tryptophan, and PharmaGABA.
L-Tryptophan
Including L-Tryptophan in CALM made obvious sense because of properties that balance mood and incite healthy sleep cycles. An essential amino acid, L-Tryptophan is a precursor to both the neurotransmitter molecules serotonin and melatonin. Once converted from L-Tryptophan to serotonin, this molecule plays a role in stabilizing mood balance and calming brain activity that may cause restlessness. Serotonin is also known to aid the process of memory organization during sleep. As L-Tryptophan helps to balance mood and memory, it also helps natural sleep cycles. Instead of using a melatonin supplement in CALM, melatonin molecules produced from L-Tryptophan activate more natural sleep-wake cycles and optimal release of melatonin at night and its suppression during the day.
Suntheanine
Found primarily in tea leaves, Suntheanine (L-Theanine), a natural amino acid, was first discovered as a central property in green tea in 1949 and decades of scientific evidence have backed Suntheanine®’s numerous health benefits. Delivered rapidly by CALM’s nano-sonicated delivery methods, Suntheanine supports increased levels of GABA production in the brain. This increase of GABA—the central inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system—is known to promote states of relaxation and less stressful moods. Suntheanine® also triggers the release of alpha brain waves that are present during activities like meditation, creative thought, daydreaming, and pre-sleep relaxation habits.
PharmaGABA®
An amino acid produced naturally in the brain, GABA functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter. Its primary role is to block brain and nervous system neuron activity, helping to calm the mind, balance mood, relieve discomfort and induce sleepiness. In CALM, PharmaGABA® is a natural form of GABA sourced from a lactic acid that’s commonly found in kimchi. Supplementing our own GABA production, PharmaGABA® increases the production of low frequency alpha brain waves and reduces beta brain wave activity attributed to busier frequencies. This dual modulation helps the mind to cope with stressful situations and improves feelings of calm and peacefulness. In addition, PharmaGABA® helps to prevent stress-induced immune system weakening.
Master Balancers
CALM just wouldn’t be CALM if it didn’t include a hemp-derived cannabinoid and terpene blend. CALM’s hemp-based blend consists of high-quality cannabinoids including CBD, small amounts of CBG (cannabigerol), and four primary terpenes including linalool, beta-caryophyllene, limonene, and terpinolene. Combined, these hemp compounds interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system and its network of CB1 and CB2 receptors, helping to regulate mood and natural circadian rhythms and sleep cycles. Additionally, cannabinoids like CBG interact with serotonin and GABA receptors helping to ease excessive brain activity and promotes relaxation responses.
Herbal Adapter Extracts
Supported by their use across the globe for centuries, nearly all cultures have utilized herbs and their plant-based properties as remedies for sleeplessness and to help promote relaxation of both the mind and body. For CALM, our formulation team carefully considered a variety of herbal options before narrowing down the herbal blend to Passionflower, Valerian Root, and Lemon Balm.
Passionflower
Passionflower is a woody vine plant that has historically thrived in tropical areas of South America, but also in Asia, Australia, and Polynesian Islands. Used by Aztec cultures for health and ceremonial purposes, passionflower was adopted by Europeans as a sedative. Passionflower extract in CALM helps to relieve emotional stress, supports the upregulation of GABA in the brain, and decreases toxicity.
Valerian Root
Growing clusters of pink or white flowers, the valerian plant is native to areas of Europe and Asia. As its roots were used hundreds of years ago in ancient Greece and Rome for sleep-related purposes, it is utilized in CALM for the same reasons. Compounds of the root interact with brain molecules to produce feelings of tranquility. Specifically, valerenic acid inhibits the breakdown of GABA, which helps to regulate nerve impulses in the brain and nervous system. Valerian root is also known for its robust antioxidant properties that promote sleepiness. Unlike some prescription sedatives, valerian root does not impair cognitive or psychomotor performance.
Lemon Balm
A popular choice for stress relief, lemon balm—also known as the “calming herb”—is a member of the mint family and is native to areas of Europe and the Mediterranean. It’s been researched to reduce activity in the brain and eases negative psychological moods. It’s also been studied as an aid for cognitive functionality. Categorized as a nervine herb, lemon balm supports the central nervous system, helping to suppress fight or flight responses.

Hi Karen, thanks for reaching out. For business support related questions please reach out to our support team. They can be reached via email ([email protected]) or phone (800-762-4917).
I am anxious to try this product, currently take 1mg of melatonin each night. How much is the recommended amount and what time, before bed time?
Hi Grace. Great question. Per our medical advisory board we recommend starting off with 0.5mL and working your way up to 1.0 mL if needed.
Please note that although CALM does not have a melatonin supplement in it, it is designed to activate natural melatonin activity.
If this gets added to the daily routine would it take the place of the 2nd daily dose of “Focus”? Otherwise it would be 3mg of CBG per 24 hours? (1m dose of focus 2x a day + 1m calm?)
Hi, You don’t necessarily have to replace FOCUS with CALM. We do recommend taking CALM an hour or so prior to bed and starting off at 0.5mL before working your way up.
Thank you very helpful on how much to take in the beginning and what to work up too; in addition to taking 1 hour before bed:)
You are very welcome : ).
